Steely Dan - Rikki Don't Lose That Number - drum cover by bellbrass (2023 version)
I've come back to working on this classic Steely Dan track, and to Jim's playing. I even got a jam block, which makes it easier to find the groove.

Gary Mallaber lays down a groove here that goes so deep that it rattles the soul. This is a song that's easy to play wrong, but very hard to capture that boogie and make it swing. Gary is a master musician.

Part three of my tribute to the great Dusty Hill (RIP). Frank Beard plays some serious shuffle work on this song; it was not easy on my left hand. He is a groove master.

Hot Legs - Rod Stewart - drum cover by bellbrass

A classic by Rod Stewart, and fantastic groove by Carmine Appice. I had fun with this one! I know there are a bunch of drum cover videos of this one already, but I just love playing it too much not to record one. From the Foot Loose And Fancy Free album, 1977. I missed the snare flams in one fill, but got the rest of it OK. Turn it up!

This is my tribute to the late Charlie Daniels. I love this great boogie beat, courtesy of Gary Allen & Fred Edwards of The Charlie Daniels Band. Charlie was one helluva fiddler, but he may have been an even better human being. Rest In Peace, Mr. Daniels.

Love the Densmore Orange kit ! Great work ! ❤
@@vito9674 Thank you!
Great job, spot on. A Jim Gordon classic, such musical drum parts.
@@dropdtune9199 Thank you; I agree. He came up with very musical fills here.
Oh my!
I'm just starting to learn to play the drums, driven by this song, I won't stop until I can play it, what a great cover dude!
Thank you; I'm sure you'll get it down! It's a fantastic song for drummers.
Well done mate
Thank you!
Needs more cowbell
Definitely.
Great job, my friend best from Donnie rock ave.
Thank you!
That’s really amazing dude. Anyday is probably my all time favorite song in terms of Jim’s playing. That section at about 3:36 where the guitar part repeats a half dozen times-Jim does six totally different fills in his signature loose-but-tight-water-tumbling-over-rocks style of his. And you nailed it. Fun to watch. Hey-here’s a Dominos geek question for you on this song. For years, I’ve been wondering if, at about the 6:10 mark, the tempo speeds up for two or three bars, then reverts back. Is that an auditory hallucination or is it really there? I can’t think of a person (alive) more qualified to answer this question than you ! 😂 Keep On Keepin’ On!
Thanks for the response! My version here was really rough - I was going for Jim's groove and feel, rather than accurately doing his fills. I'm with you - the part he does around 3:36 is amazing. I'm still learning how he does his fills without speeding up or slowing down - my biggest weakness - but one of his biggest strengths as a session drummer. As far as the speeding up around the 6:10 mark - that may have been just me. I will give it a listen to see if the band speeds up. if it's just for a bar or two, then it'll be Jim or Carl speeding up - and Carl followed Jim's tempo most of the time. So, either it was me speeding up (likely) or Jim (unlikely). I'll let you know what I hear!
OK, I listened to the part around 6:10 - to my ears, it sounds like a splice. It throws off the beat just a millisecond. That's what I hear, anyway.
Outstanding!
you are the best, thanks from brasil, im not a drummer, but i think to play this song, you will be my reference, thanks for your light man one more registered, thanks
Muchas Gracias!
Jim Gordon's drums MADE this song a hit. Excellent cover - right in the groove.
I agree 100%! Jim was the hitmaker. Thank you!
PLEASE...can we give BWs amazing and immortal high notes some credit here???
You freaking rock, dude !
Nice!
Thanks!
Great cover! You really nailed every drum fill; I rewound and had to watch all several times. ⭐️⭐️
Thank you! That was a fun song to learn.
Most amazing singer for Christ Merry Christmas
He sang with The Metropolitan Opera for a few years, if I'm not mistaken. Merry Christmas!
Dude really must love France.....lol....Awesome video....I'd love to see a tutorial or something. I'm a songwriter (AKA I love to play drums but I'm not good).
Jim Gordon is my favorite all time drummer, great job!
He's my favorite drummer, too. Thank you!
Fantastic!!!
Thank you!
Very nice
Thank you!
Fantastic mate, good sounding drums - great drums!
I appreciate it! Thanks 😊
Nice 16 notes on the hi-hat.
Thanks!
Why? Because you expect too much from others and not enough of yourself. Peace
Great cover. Congrats!
Thank you!

Drums sounds great!
Thank you!
Awesome
CDB had 2 drummers on stage playing. I really like the Bass line!
Just loved that tune ...you did it justice...it's a tuff tune to pull off and you played it with great musicality...cheers ...keep up the good work ...drum on...
Thanks very much. It's a fairly complicated tune. I still practice this from time to time.
yeah, you nailed it !
Thanks!
Fantastic JBG cover, you're an exceptional player. The Camcos sound spot on. Wonderful! Thanks for posting.
Thank you so much!
Excellent playing tuning recording etc on this classic JBG track. Thank you for doing this!
Thanks again! I always come back to the Dominos and JBG.
As impressive as it is to see such varied patterns sometimes I think that less is more and that if the complexity were cut in half it would have more impact. Which is the dominant instrument? Only thinking...
I think that Jim pulled it off, and still grooved this song into the ground. The mark of a true master.
@@bellbrass Check out DD Lost Sessions from 1970, especially Devil Road.
@@jorgefiguerola1239 Yep; have all of 'em...Devil Road is a gem.
These domino covers are amazing, wish they were just drums so i could jam too, keep up the good work
Where are you from? Would like to see you live.
I'm in Kentucky. I'd like to see me live, too...ha ha. Not currently in a band.
@@bellbrass Guessing Louisville, Lexington, or Bowling Green. Did I hit it? Have you been in a band? Posting date on video and comments go back years. Check out DD Lost Sessions, especially Devil Road. Also, Buddy Rich solos and Gene Krupa.
Excellent choice. Extended version is so appreciated. So sad that DD was short-lived with only 1 album. But there are the Lost Sessions Try Devil Road. Never tires. RIP James Gordon
Incredible, this should be more popular
Thank you!
When I saw Bellbrass , I thought it said Badass . You can cover Carl Palmer , you are one Bad ass drummer . Bravo
awesome! thanks for this - its my fave ZZ song, cant believe i had to hunt for someone covering it on drums (its all LaGrange covers...NOT as good as this song!)
Thanks! It's more difficult than I thought it would be. Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow… this is insane
Excelent!
Thanks 🙏!
I'm a guitarist, but a big fan of Jim Gordon, as well as people like Charlie Watts, Ringo Starr, and Keith Moon. You did a fantastic job with this, and made it look so effortless...the sign of a pro. Outstanding work, sir.
Thank you so much. I actually came back to this song recently and just posted an updated version. Jim lays a groove on this song a mile deep. Still learning, still studying...
You did an excellent job of this. I may consider covering it myself. Keep on a rockin'
Thank you!
Dude, you rock. I can hear the changes between the 2 versions you put up, but both sound great. I gotta learn this song on drums for a class I am taking. Videos like these and others posted up by good people like you, make a huge difference for new players trying to learn. Thank you.
Hey man, thanks. That's exactly why I post videos of Jim's playing - I've been studying his playing for around 12 years now. In a way, I feel like he's been my instructor. I heard an isolated track from this song, and realized that he's not playing sixteens on the hi-hat...he dubbed in Congas and a shaker sound of some kind to fill out the sound, and his groove on the kit goes all the way to the center of the earth. Good luck with your class, and we will be studying the master together! BTW, I was looking at a cheat sheet for this track - I've forgotten how to read, so I did my own shorthand for the fills.
Love that song. Great job!
Thank you!
Excellent
Thank you!
